Google CEO Sundar Pinchai should stop his company from developing a censored version of its search engine for China, Senator Marco Rubio said in a letter published on Tuesday.
"While the lure of China's 1.4-billion-person market is strong, I hope that your commitment to Google's stated values is even stronger," Rubio said in his letter to Pinchai.
Google is reported to be working on a search engine for China, dubbed "Dragonfly," which blocks access to websites blacklisted by the Chinese government.
In his letter, Rubio urged Pinchai to drop the plans for Dragonfly, saying creating a censored search engine would risk making Google complicit in China's human rights abuses and its regime of censorship.
